Social Bookmarking Service

We have created a social bookmarking site to offer web site bookmarks for educators. When appropriate we have tagged individual bookmarks to chapters within “Integrating Technology for Meaningful Learning.” You are invited to use this service to locate useful web sites.

Using the Site to Locate Resources

There are two basic ways to search for useful links:

  1. The site offers a search window. Enter terms appropriate to your query and see what resources are available.
  2. Use the tags that have been stored with links to see what is available.

A popular tags page lists the tags that have been created. Select a tag to generate the list of bookmarks associated with that tag.

When exploring bookmarks, the tags associated with that bookmark will be displayed. Select one of the tags and a list of all bookmarks associated with that tag will be generated.

Contributing to the Site

This is a SOCIAL bookmarking site. This implies that you can participate in the site. If you register and then log in, you can add bookmarks to the site, edit existing bookmarks (after creating your own copy) to offer a different description or add different tags, and rate how valuable you find the actual web site referenced by a bookmark. Your bookmarks can be shared (made public) or kept private.

We offer this site as a public resource. We do reserve the opportunity to edit resources appearing on the site for those from our own institution and those individuals using our books. Your access to this page indicates that you are eligible to contribute to the site.

Additional information (you must register and login before the following become functions are available):

1) Add a bookmark

A new tab is added at the top of of the page. Selecting this tab opens a form allowing a new bookmark to be added.

  • Enter the address of the bookmark.
  • Click in the Title box and the title should appear if you are connected to the Internet.
  • Enter a description.
  • Add tags - separate tags with commas - try to use existing tags unless you intend to identify a new characteristic of the site.
  • Select privacy - public for general viewing.

2) Adding tags

When you log in, public bookmarks include a "Copy" link. The copy link adds that bookmark to "My Bookmarks". Allows bookmark to be edited by you (description, tags) - saved privately or publicly.

3) Evaluating a site

Select the checkmark to go to a form for rating site.

The form requires a simple three level response. You will be allowed to rate each site one time.

Why rate sites?

  • We use the frequency of using individual bookmarks and user ratings to control the order of bookmarks in response to a search. The idea is to put the more popular and valuable bookmarks at the top of the list.
  • We also use ratings to identify bookmarks that no longer are associated with active sites. With the number of bookmarks in this system, it is difficult for us to locate dead sites. If users rate bookmarks as not useful, we take a look to make certain the link still works.
