ISTE Establishes New Standards for Teachers

ISTE has been taking a systematic approach to updating the standards created some years ago. In 2007 at the National Educational Computing Conference, ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) announced "refreshed" standards for students. In 2008, ISTE moved on to refresh standards for teachers. You may be enrolled in a preservice teacher education program and these new standards may apply to your training. Our textbook was written several years ago, so the standards we describe (page 28) are no longer the current standards advocated by ISTE.

We list the original standards in the textbook. However, we do not have copyright clearance to offer the complete description of the refreshed standards from this web site. The ISTE standards are available from the ISTE web site or by purchasing print materials.

What has changed? Perhaps the best way to describe what is now expected is to generalize by claiming ISTE expects teachers to be able to "integrate" technology in accomplishing a wide variety of learning goals. So, teachers must be prepared to engage students with technology in accomplishing learning goals across the curriculum. Clearly, our own thinking is consistent with such priorities.
