Every Teacher's Wish

Teachers, coaches, and parents often try to motivate those they are responsible for with some variation of the following comment. "I do not expect every student (athlete, etc.) to be brilliant, but I do expect everyone to give his/her best effort."

While this statement may appear to be fair and logical, it often seems that some less capable individuals do not try as hard as they might and are quite obvious about this lack of effort. Perhaps these students are lazy. Are there some other explanations that explain behavior (i.e., the lack of effort) that nearly guarantees failure?
