Cognitive theory, by definition, deals with internal and thus invisible mental events. Cognitive models attempt to describe behaviors such as:
To research or to teach such behaviors, it is helpful and perhaps necessary to make the invisible visible. I refer to this as externalizing (as in bringing a representation or an artifact of what is happening in the mind out into the observable world). Here are some examples of externalizing mental behaviors. These are examples I have had some experience using and some are a little peculiar. The common idea here is that these techniques generate data and these data can be claimed as a way to measure some construct. After examining these examples, move on to the discussion question. |
